Braedon has been in his glory the whole time we have been here and has collected a wide assortment of rock including some beautiful specimens of red and blue jasper, as well as several interesting thunder eggs and geodes. At his request, we visited a local rock shop on Tuesday and spent a wonderful hour with the old fellow who runs it. His encyclopaedic knowledge of both rocks and US history kept us well entertained and we all left with a special momento to bring home. Mine is a cross cut geode that has been polished and includes some bright red jasper and crystal arranged in a very interesting pattern. It will find its’ place on our mantel at home and will forever remind me of the beauty of New Mexico.
Since we have kept a pretty busy schedule over the past couple of weeks, we decided to slow things down for the last couple days and have taken many long hikes up the mountains both here at RockHound and at neighbouring Spring Canyon State Park.
Tomorrow, we leave RockHound and cross the border into Arizona. We will be visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park in the afternoon for a cave tour and then heading into Tombstone and Bisbee on Saturday. To get the kids in the mood and help them understand the historical context of the place, my dad hunted around Demming yesterday and rented the movie Tombstone with Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell. We thoroughly enjoyed the film and the boys are now really excited to see the places where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday fought the loathsome Cowboys. It should be a really exciting couple of days!

Hi:
ReplyDeleteThe yellow poppies are beautiful. So glad Dad made the trip out. I'm sure he's having a wonderful time with all of you but especially the boys. I bet Braedon is loving his time hunting for the best specimens. If he gets a chance, I'm sure the kids would love a little piece of New Mexico.
It's cooler again here and rainy with cloudy skies for most of the day. Jordan is rather disgusted with the rain especially as we just read the Vail got three feet of snow in the last two days!! As for the rest of us, we are ready for the sun and boating season.
Love Tanya
Hi Tam, I love the dessert in bloom and your rock sounds lovely. I can see that Braedon is right in his element with all the different rocks around! I'm glad that you were able to slow things down and enjoy some hikes. After being outside so much in wonderful weather it's hard to have the rain here although the garden needs it. I'm counting the days until I see you. Love mum xxxx
ReplyDeleteTook a few moments tonight to catch up on your adventures. Sounds like the side trip near Taos was rather hair raising. Glad it all turned out okay. I have next Friday off and we're considering a trip to Santa Fe or Taos for a couple nights. Evan just returned from two nights in Summit County. He skied Vail and said it was some of the best powder he'd ever seen. He posted a video that you might be able to see from my FB page. Hugs, Bon
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are having a great time - can't wait till you reach us!
ReplyDeleteWe have not see the dessert in all its glory. Lucky you. Glad I was not on that hike. Sounds a little hair raising. We went for a mild hike in Dundas Conservation area on Sun as it was beautiful here. Trying to get in condition for our trip. Glad you are all enjoying the time with you Dad.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for our time. We leave in a month. Oh my, Oh my, I have so much to do. Lucky curling is over.
Love you Mom and dad
