Later on Saturday, we had the opportunity to learn a hard lesson, as we travelled toward Taos, New Mexico. Thankfully, God was with us and everything turned out okay, but we certainly had a couple of hair-raising moments and I for one, have nails chewed down to the quick! Since our destination of Ojo Calliente was several miles South and West of Taos, we travelled down a small rural highway for most of the journey. Somewhere in the foothills in the middle of nowhere, we realized that we were going to require some gas before arriving at our destination and were alarmed to discover that there were no gas stations within 35 miles and no cell signal either! To deal with this issue, we quickly re-routed and headed into Taos. Unfortunately, it was dusk and our GPS made two mistakes. First, it did not realize that one of the local highways had been closed due to a rockslide and second, it didn’t mention that the alternate route required a descent into the gorge down a gravel road with multiple switchbacks. Thankfully, Shawn’s calm nature and confident driving skills prevailed and we arrived to a parking lot at the bottom where we decided to spend the night. The next morning, our salvation arrived in the form of a sweet old ranger who not only provided us with a 5-gallon jug of gas, but also directions out of the gorge. It was a night we won’t soon forget!
Today, we spent our day at Ojo Calliente, a natural mineral springs turned spa just south of Taos on the way to Sante Fe.
Tomorrow, for Shawn’s birthday, we are heading into Albuquerque. The plan is to visit the Natural History Museum and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Centre before heading out for a typical New Mexico dinner (green and red chile here we come!).
We are having an amazing time, but miss you all!
Tammy
Sounds like a hair raising drive down the gorge. I bet you were ready for a drink when you arrived at the parking lot!! Glad you all had a wonderful day at the spa. Funny enough I spent the day at the Scandanavian spa at Blue Mountain on Friday where they have pools of 102, 103 and 104 degrees but also 57, 60 and 61 degrees. I got brave enough for the 61 degree pool twice. The day was topped off with a eucalyptus steam bath. Not quite the same scenary but a wonderfully relaxing experience. Wish I could have joined you at Ojo Calliente. We are missing you all. I went to Mum's last night and helped her sign up for Skype. I signed myself up when we got home. We are having some technical sound problems but we hope to have them resolved by Easter Sunday in case we can call you (Skype you??).
ReplyDeleteA very happy birthday wish for you, Shawn. Hope you enjoys the day and the chiles.
Love Tanya
Tanya,
ReplyDeleteWe haven't finalized our Sunday plans yet, but will Skype you guys at mum's. I emailed her to ask what time. Glad you had a good day at the spa.
Miss you and love you too!
Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday.
ReplyDeleteSounds like quite an experience you had, but these are the ones you will be able to tell for yeras. I thought you put a gas jug on the trailer for extra.
The weather will also be turning nice here for Easter week-end with promises of 23 plus. We are going to Kim's and Glenn will also be coming down. I guess I had better sign up for Skype as well and get a camera.
Old Town in Albuquerqe is a very neat spot for shopping and when we were there they had musicians playing everywhere. We had lunch there in a restaurant near the church. Prices were excellent and portions generous and the place was quaint. It was called Casa de Ruiz Church Street cafe.
Hope you have a nice day and a great 39th.
Love Mom and Dad
I'll add to the collection of Happy Birthdays. Nice way to spend the day, warm weather, good food, and all the history you can handle. Your hair raising experience reminds me of going through Powder River Pass in the rain in the motorhome and getting struck by lightening. We ended up camping at the top of the mountain rather than the bottom but it is a story that has been told many times. Miss you guys and wish I was there. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteLove Kim and the rest.
