Thanks Everyone!

Thanks for all the wonderful birthday wish comments, emails and special delivery cards (thanks Mom). I had a great day exploring Old Town Albuquerque and an excellent authentic New Mexico dinner at the Church Street Cafe. All and all a birthday that will live long in my memories.

We will all be at Kims on Sunday so we can maybe connect there. It will be great to see your faces other than pictures and videos.

4: Exploring - Living our Dream!

Even before our kids were born, travel was something we knew that we wanted to share with them. For more than five years, our family has been planning, saving and waiting for our chance of a lifetime - six uninterrupted months to step back from our day to day lives and discover new places, new people and new experiences! Time to laugh together, to enjoy each other, and to create memories we can cherish long into the future.

So here we are...
February 27, 2010 marked the start of our journey across Canada and the United States. Our leaves of absence have been approved, our trailer has been purchased and loaded, our route has been planned, and our BIG trip has begun. We are literally 4: Exploring! Come and join us on our adventure!

Top 10 Lists

A friend recently suggested that we create some Top 10 Lists as we travel. We thought this was such a great idea that we decided to get started right away. Watch for more lists as our trip gets underway.

Top 10 Things We Have Learned in COLORADO

1. A hot tub is a skier/snowboarder's best friend...we NEED a hot tub!

2. Two teenagers and one little boy can spend 10 days in a terrain park and still have energy to skateboard in the parking lot each evening. Shawn and Tammy are NOT teenagers!

3. Pulling a 4 foot boy out of 3 feet of fresh powder while wearing skis presents unusual challenges!

4. The differences between a Cork5 and a Rodeo are only obvious to those who wear TALL tees.

5. Packed lunches taste really good at 13,00 feet. Six hungry skier and snowboarders can eat more than 100 sandwiches in 10 days on the slopes.

6. Tammy does impressive flips while skiing black diamond runs in fresh powder. Shawn does impressive spins while exiting the chairlift. It would be preferable if these tricks were intentional!

7. Kids will try just about anything if they can land in a foam pit. Some kids don't require the foam pit!

8. Colorado has many great local brewpubs, however the beer in the green cans tastes like feet and even teenagers won't drink it!

9. Driving over the Vail Pass on I-70 in snow is a hair-raising experience. Tractor trailers can jack-knife very easily even with chains on and buses can land on their sides half-way down the embankment (Yes, we saw this with our own eyes!).

10. Three weeks and five mountains is a wonderful combination...we NEED a mountain in Ontario.

Top 10 Things We Have Learned While Packing

1. Rubbermaid bins have a limited capacity no matter how carefully you wedge items in.

2. When you squeeze too much into a Rubbermaid bin, the sides bow out and the lids won't fit, even when you sit on them.

3. Children really like the phrase "Can't I just bring one more _____?". Husbands really like the phrase "We'll find room!"

4. Males and females have entirely different understandings of the word organized.

5. 4 people + 5 1/2 months + variable weather conditions + unlimited sporting activities = 20 pairs of shoes (hiking boots, winter boots, running shoes, sandals, water shoes).

6. Packing 20 pairs of shoes into a 17ft. trailer is an impossible task!

7. An 8-year-old and his GIGANTIC stuffed lamb cannot be parted.

8. No matter how much laundry you do, the item you are trying to pack is always in the wash.

9. Lists are a girl's best friend - as long as you remember where you put them!

10. There are things at the bottom of the freezer that are best left undiscovered.
